Elections 2020

NOW! is the time to start planning, if you haven’t already. Make sure your voice is heard by planning to exercise your RIGHT to vote. A right that so many have fought, shed blood, endured pain, and died for. A RIGHT not to be taken lightly. “The right to vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool or instrument in a democratic society. We must use it.” – Rep John Lewis – US House of Representatives 1987-2020, American Civil Rights Leader

Voter Tips

General Election – The General Election for in person voting takes place on November 3rd. When voting on this day you must vote at your specific polling location. Don’t know your polling location or times? Check with your County Board of Elections. You must already be registered to vote in order to vote on this day. If you have voted in NC before, you do not need to show ID to vote (but have it with you anyway – it’s not a big deal, considering what’s at stake!). IF you are a first time voter who registered by mail AND you did not provide your driver’s license number or the last 4 digits of your Social Security number on your registration form, you will need to show ID to vote. Acceptable forms of voter ID include: a driver’s license or state ID; US passport; employee ID; student ID; military ID. Don’t forget your mask!

Voter Registration – The deadline for voter registration for the General Election is October 9. You can register through your County Board of Elections or the Division of Motor Vehicles. You must be a citizen of the US and 18 years of age by the day of the  general election. For additional requirements refer to the County Board of Elections. The County Board of Elections website also has information about the candidates, sample ballots, voting locations, and schedules.

Vote By Mail – Any voter can vote by mail in North Carolina. You must submit an Absentee Ballot Request Form to receive a mail-in ballot. This form is available through the County and State Election Board offices and websites. The deadline for requesting a mail in ballot is October 27; meaning that the completed request form for the mail-in ballot must be received in the Elections Office by October 27. If you are choosing to vote by mail-in, request your ballot early. When you receive it, read it carefully, follow the instructions to complete it, and return it as quickly as possible. The North Carolina State Board of Elections website is www.ncsbe.gov. The Alamance County Board of Elections website is: www.alamance-nc.com/elections/. The mailed in ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received in the office by 5pm on November 6. The dropped off ballot must be received in the office by 5pm on Election Day – November 3. The Alamance County Board of Elections is located at 115 S Maple Street in Graham.

Do it early! Do it in person if at all possible!

In Person Early Voting – Early voting begins on October 15 and continues until October 31 in North Carolina. It’s also known as One-Stop Early Voting. Any registered voter can vote early at any of the Early Voting locations. There is also Same-Day Registration during the Early Voting period. Any eligible voter can register and vote on the same day at any of the Early Voting locations during Early Voting. You will need to show ID in order to register. In Alamance County, there are five Early Voting locations. The Early Voting schedule includes a Sunday option for the first time in Alamance County. On Sunday, October 18, the polls will be open from 1-4pm. The Alamance NAACP will be sponsoring a “Souls to the Polls” initiative for that Sunday date. The locations and the entire Early Voting schedules for Alamance County can be found at https://www.alamance-nc.com/elections/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2020/07/Early-Voting-Sites-November-2020.pdf.
